Supreme Court Fines Samay Raina ₹3 Lakh for Violating Order in Disability Remarks Case

The Supreme Court has imposed a fine of ₹3 lakh each on five individuals, including stand-up comedian and YouTuber Samay Raina, in connection with a case involving insensitive remarks about persons with disabilities. The remarks were allegedly made during the show “India's Got Latent”. The court had given them an opportunity to rectify their mistake and directed them to invite persons with disabilities to their shows. However, they failed to comply with the order.

The organisation that filed the petition informed the court that its earlier directions had not been followed. This drew strong criticism from a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant. 

The bench observed, 

"It is clear that Samay Raina has taken the court lightly. He has blatantly violated the order. An affidavit was filed despite there being nothing on record. This further aggravates the situation."

The court further remarked, 

"If you are not willing to mend your ways and respect the sentiments of society, you will have to face the consequences." 

Court reduces fine

It initially imposed a fine of ₹10 lakh each on the accused. However, after the comedians' counsel requested leniency, the court reduced the fine to ₹3 lakh each.

The Supreme Court directed all the accused to deposit the fine within two weeks. It also warned that if its directions are not complied with, the penalty would be increased to ₹30 lakh.

Cure SMA Foundation's allegations

The Cure SMA India Foundation accused Samay Raina and the other comedians of mocking persons with disabilities. It also alleged that they made insensitive remarks about the costly treatment required for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). 

Earlier directions ignored

On November 27, 2025, the court directed Samay Raina to invite persons with disabilities who have excelled in various fields to his platform so that their achievements could inspire society. 

The court also said that the proceeds from such events should be used for the treatment and welfare of persons with disabilities. Similar directions were issued to the other comedians as well.
