Madhya Pradesh: Khategaon police station in-charge Dilip Puri received information late on Sunday night about a truck allegedly transporting a large quantity of illegal liquor along the Indore-Betul Highway.
Following the information, he reached the highway with a police team to intercept the suspected vehicle.
The truck was reportedly parked near a roadside eatery. When Dilip Puri approached the vehicle and asked the driver to step out, the driver allegedly attempted to flee instead of complying.
In the process, Puri fell to the ground, and the rear wheel of the truck ran over him.
He sustained severe injuries in the incident. Other police personnel present at the spot immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors attempted to save his life for nearly two hours.
Doctors also administered CPR, but he could not be saved due to the severity of his injuries and significant blood loss. Police have seized the truck and launched an investigation into the alleged illegal liquor smuggling network.
Police Personnel Losing Their Lives During Operations Across India
However, this is not the first such incident reported from different parts of the country in 2026. Several police and excise department personnel have lost their lives this year while attempting to apprehend suspects or taking action against illegal activities.
According to media reports, in some cases, personnel were killed in alleged firing by smugglers, while in others, police officers lost their lives during raids or accidents while attempting to stop suspicious vehicles. These incidents highlight the risks police personnel face while taking action against criminals and smugglers.
Police Duty-Related Death Figures Released on Police Commemoration Day
The seriousness of police personnel losing their lives while on duty can also be understood from figures released in October.
According to information shared on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day on October 21, 2026, a total of 154 police personnel from state police forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) lost their lives in the line of duty across the country between September 1, 2025, and August 31, 2026.
However, this figure includes deaths caused by road accidents and other duty-related incidents and does not exclusively represent personnel killed while apprehending criminals.
