Uber, the online cab-booking service, has launched a new feature for its riders and drivers. The feature, called “Record My Trip” or “Record My Ride”, will allow Uber drivers to automatically record their trips.
According to Uber’s official website, the feature will record audio and video of activities during a trip. The recordings will be kept secure, keeping safety and privacy in mind. They can only be officially accessed during safety investigations or legal disputes.
How Can Uber Drivers Record Their Trips?
Uber drivers will have to turn on the ‘Record My Ride’ feature on their phones to use it. Once enabled, the driver app will automatically use the phone’s front-facing camera and microphone to record trips. Drivers can also use this feature by registering their dashcam devices with the Uber app.
According to Uber, riders will be notified in advance if their trip is being recorded. However, if a rider is uncomfortable with the recording, they can cancel the ride immediately.
How Will Privacy Be Maintained Even After Video Recording?
According to Uber’s official website, neither the driver nor the rider will have access to the recorded videos. Even the company itself will not be able to access them directly. The videos will be fully encrypted and will be automatically deleted if no incident is reported within 14 days.
Uber Announces Record My Ride Feature in India
Aditya Kapoor, Director of Supply Operations for Uber India and South Asia, officially announced the launch of the safety feature, Record My Ride or Record My Trip, for India during a media briefing.
The company had previously tested this feature in markets such as the US and Latin America to assess how it worked. Following its successful implementation there, it is now being rolled out on a large scale for around 2 million drivers in India.
Today, misleading or incomplete videos often go viral on social media, making it difficult to establish the complete truth. Uber’s new feature aims to create an accurate and tamper-proof record of trips, making it easier to verify videos and claims circulating on social media.
