For families who see their beloved getting lost in the fog of Alzheimer’s, there is now hope in the form of a new medication launched in India. Pharmaceutical firm Eisai of Japan has introduced Leqembi (lecanemab) in India following marketing approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
The medication is designed to be used by people at early stages of Alzheimer’s, including those suffering from MCI and mild dementia of Alzheimer’s type.
The distinguishing feature of Leqembi compared to many currently available medications is the fact that this one is not just symptom management medication. In fact, it is a disease modifying therapy that targets the disease’s mechanisms and slows down its progression in suitable patients.
The launch of Leqembi in India is particularly relevant at this point of time. With the increasing ageing of Indian population, there are more cases of dementia, but lack of awareness and late diagnosis still pose serious problems in the area.
While Leqembi is not a cure for Alzheimer’s, for eligible patients who receive early diagnosis, it can buy extra time.
