Stalin, a member of the DMK party and Leader of the Opposition, was arrested by the Tamil Nadu police for making some “objectionable comments” at a political rally in Thanjavur. In its order passed today, the Madras High Court asked for his release after police have completed interrogation as the state government had made it clear before the court that it did not want to seek judicial custody of Stalin.

Arrest Following FIR

In connection with the FIR filed due to the remarks he made at a rally over the issue of Cauvery waters, Udhayanidhi was arrested from his house in Chennai. His comments had angered many politicians and raised objections against him, especially with regard to the involvement of actress Trisha in his remarks.

Intervention of the High Court

Immediately after his arrest, Udhayanidhi filed a case before the Madras High Court. In court, the government of Tamil Nadu stated that the police wanted only to interrogate him and hence were not looking for his remand, but releasing him on station bail. Accepting the government's stand, the High Court ordered the police to release the DMK leader after finishing their investigation.

Political Responses

With the arrest of Udhayanidhi, the political struggle in Tamil Nadu has been intensified further. The DMK has termed the arrest as political in nature and has accused the ruling government of trying to arrest opposition leaders through legal means. In contrast, the opposition is firm about holding Udhayanidhi responsible for his remarks and taking necessary legal steps.

What Happens Further?

Though Udhayanidhi has been released from his arrest now, there will be a police investigation of his FIR.
