JNU Joins DU, IITs in Advising Students to Stay Away from Jantar Mantar Protests

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is the latest educational institution to call upon its students and other faculty members not to take part in the ongoing protests in Jantar Mantar in the national capital. This advisory was released following similar directives issued by the University of Delhi (DU), IIT Roorkee, and IIT Madras due to nation-wide protests regarding examinations paper leakages and other education related problems.

Warning about Legal and Disciplinary Action

According to the advisory, the JNU authorities have advised all the members of the university community not to indulge in any protest or illegal gathering because the same might result in legal as well as disciplinary action against them. Moreover, it has been advised to the students of the university to use social networking sites in an appropriate manner.

Similar Advisories in Other Universities

In a similar manner, earlier the Delhi University authorities had warned the students of negative impact on their education and future careers due to participation in such protests. The IIT Roorkee and IIT Madras have also released advisories against the students' involvement in political protests without prior permission of the institutes.

Opposition Parties and Student Organizations Oppose This Move

The advisories have been criticized by the opposition leaders and the student organizations, as they feel that instead of discouraging students from protesting, the universities must support the rights of the students and protect their democratic rights. Rahul Gandhi, a leader from Congress party, also questioned these advisories and said that the educational institutes were trying to frighten students and stop them from dissenting.

Protests Continue Despite High Security Arrangements

While the protests being organized by the students at Jantar Mantar continue to draw the participation of people from different parts of the nation, there is tight security surrounding the place, and the demonstrators are closely monitored by the authorities.
