Global Tiger Day was celebrated in 2026 in India, where the Union Government made it clear how much the wildlife of India had gained in the past decade. Speaking in the celebration of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) of New Delhi, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced that there are now 3,682 tigers in India, along with 58 tiger reserves in the nation. This he attributed to the conservation efforts and policies that India has been following for the last 12 years.
Wildlife Conservation Beyond Statistics
In his speech at the celebration, Yadav made it clear that wildlife conservation in India is all about building a harmonious relationship with nature and not just about protecting wild animals. He called on people to lead an environmentally conscious life and said that nature should not just serve the purpose of tourism but also give people peace and inspiration. India has also created more elephant reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, protected areas, and wetlands in the last 12 years.
NTCA Sets Up Portal for Eco-tourism
To mark the occasion, NTCA had also set up an Eco-tourism website which contains authentic information regarding all the tiger reserves in India. The website allows booking of safaris and accommodations, in addition to promoting responsible tourism by providing easy access to the information.
Appreciating the Conservationists at the Forefront
Besides, the occasion also saw the recognition of the efforts of forest department officers and wildlife department staff through NTCA’s award for outstanding performance in tiger conservation and protection of wildlife. Yadav has urged wildlife officials to write about their experiences and traditional knowledge regarding wildlife conservation.
A Day for Awareness & Research
There were five new publications regarding tiger conservation, habitat management and wildlife research released on the occasion. Various school competitions, awareness drives and exhibitions have also been organized in order to involve citizens in tiger conservation.
