Ghee Sankranti or Olgia / Ghyu Tyar is one of the traditional seasonal festivals celebrated in Uttarakhand. The festival is celebrated in the first day of the Hindu month of Bhado (Bhadrapada). The date of this festival in 2026 will be 17th August. The festival symbolizes the significance of agriculture and animal husbandry in Uttarakhand.
The festival comes at a time when crops are doing well, cattle giving milk are said to be healthy and fruits and vegetables are abundant. This means that the farming community celebrates the festival with joy to show their gratitude towards nature, animals, and their agricultural efforts.
What does 'Olag' mean?
One of the unique customs of the festival includes giving Olag, which means a traditional gift or offering. In the past, the farmers and craftsmen used to offer their agricultural products or handmade items to the respected persons such as landlords and benefactors. The historical documents also include craftsmen offering their tools and crafts, while the farmers used to offer their produce, for example, ghee, milk, vegetables and many other types of seasonal produce.
Later on, this custom transformed into traditional gift exchange amongst family members like nephews and maternal uncles, sons-in-law and fathers-in-law and Olgia. Axes, agricultural tools, ghee, vegetables, firewood, metal calipers, datkhocha (metallic tooth pick) and Binai (traditional harp).
Food is yet another significant aspect of Ghee Sankranti. Traditionally, people eat ghee with chapati or roti containing urad dal, and at the same time, the forehead is smeared with ghee as a part of Ghee Sankranti festivities.
Ghee Sankranti is not just about the harvest festival but also about thanksgiving, prosperity, appreciation of traditional occupations, and bonding of communities. Though it is not as popular as some other festivals, Ghee Sankranti has managed to maintain the farming traditions of Uttarakhand.
