Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu inaugurated the Delhi Police's first women's police station in the Sabzi Mandi area of the North District on 19 June. The station will be fully operational from saturday. It will investigate crimes against women and children throughout the North District. Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha was also present on the occasion.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu said
"The success of this initiative will be measured not just by the number of cases registered, but by the trust it instills in women and girls. Ensuring women's safety is everyone's responsibility, and any crime should be reported to the police immediately."
The Delhi Police Women's Police Station will investigate cases of domestic violence, dowry harassment, sexual assault, molestation, stalking, rape, and crimes against children. The station will be staffed primarily by women personnel to provide a sensitive and safe environment for victims.
Public hearing programme
LG Sandhu also announced that a 'public hearing' programme will be launched in all police stations in the city from Saturday, under which senior police officers will listen to complaints from the public and take necessary steps towards their resolution.
On this occasion, Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha stated,
Delhi Police is implementing numerous programmes for women's safety, including 116 Pink Booths, women's PCR vans, the 1091 helpline, and self-defence training. He expressed hope that this women's police station will become a model of gender-sensitive and victim-centred policing.
Senior officers of Delhi Police, RWA representatives, women leaders, and local citizens also participated in this programme.
India's first women police station
India's first all-women police station was established in Kozhikode (Calicut), Kerala, on October 23, 1973. It was officially inaugurated by the then-Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, with M. Padmini Amma appointed as its first Sub-Inspector.
