The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi on Friday due to the likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall. Wet weather is expected to continue for the next three days, while only light rain is expected over the weekend.
Delhi’s daytime temperatures dropped sharply on Thursday due to widespread rain, reducing the gap between the day’s maximum and minimum temperatures to just 2°C and causing waterlogging in several parts of the capital.
Day Temperature Drops By 6.6°C
The city recorded a maximum temperature of 27.6°C, which was 6.6°C lower than Wednesday’s 32.6°C and significantly below the normal high of 34.2°C for early August. The difference between the day’s minimum and maximum temperatures was only 2°C, with the minimum temperature recorded at 25.6°C.
Several areas of the city experienced waterlogging due to the rainfall. The Public Works Department (PWD) received around 15 complaints from various locations, including Press Enclave Marg, Defence Colony, Kanjhawala, and Palla. Waterlogging was also reported in Delhi Development Authority-managed areas such as Dwarka, Saraswati Vihar near Pitampura, and parts of Karkardooma.
Waterlogging Causes Traffic Disruptions Across Delhi
Officials said water accumulation led to traffic congestion on MB Road near Sainik Farm, near Saket Metro station, in several parts of Najafgarh, on Rohtak Road, Press Enclave Road, and both carriageways of Anuvrat Marg near Qutub Minar Metro station.
Waterlogging was also reported on internal roads managed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, including areas such as Badarpur, Sadar Bazar, Paschim Vihar Market, Shani Bazar Road in Uttam Nagar, and Hari Nagar.
A PWD official said,
“We had deployed teams across vulnerable locations before the rain began. Pumps and field staff were activated wherever water accumulated. Complaints received through the control room were attended to on priority. Monitoring of waterlogging-prone stretches is continuing as more rainfall is forecast over the next few days, though most flood-prone spots remained relatively dry through the day.”
Despite water logging in several areas, traffic remained relatively light, with only a few congestion spots reported during the day.
