Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), is set to appear before a review committee of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) after the party’s X (formerly Twitter) account was withheld in India. The case has sparked a wider debate on free speech, political satire and the limits of online expression.

For thousands of young Indians, CJP emerged as a unique voice on social media. Through memes, satire and sharp commentary, the platform often highlighted issues such as unemployment, examination-related concerns and governance. Its content resonated with a generation that increasingly turns to social media to discuss public issues.

However, in May, the party’s X account became inaccessible in India following a legal order. The move surprised many supporters, especially because the account had rapidly gained popularity online.

Dipke challenged the decision before the Delhi High Court, arguing that the account’s content was largely satirical and fell within the scope of free expression. His legal team maintained that if certain posts were problematic, authorities could have acted against those specific posts rather than blocking the entire account.

The Delhi High Court has now asked MeitY’s review committee to examine the matter. While the court did not order the immediate restoration of the account, it noted that the committee has the power to reconsider the decision and recommend unblocking it if warranted.

The outcome of the hearing could have implications beyond a single social media account. Digital rights advocates see the case as a test of how India balances regulation of online platforms with citizens’ right to express opinions, criticism and satire.

As Dipke prepares to present his case before the panel, many young social media users, legal experts and free speech advocates will be watching closely. The decision may help define where the line is drawn between government regulation and online expression in India’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
