Former chairman of Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran, has resigned from the position, bringing to an end his decade-long stint as head of the Tata Group. At 63, he has handed his resignation to the board and will continue to hold his position until the end of his term in February 2027, according to Reuters, citing a source familiar with the development, saying no successor has been chosen yet.
This is because the announcement was made a few days before the annual general meeting of Tata Sons, scheduled for August 18, where members were set to vote on whether to reappoint Chandrasekaran as a director, without whom he cannot hold the chairmanship position.
Dispute with Tata Trusts Resulted in Withdrawal
Sources indicate that growing discord between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, which collectively own a 66 percent stake in the holding firm is behind the departure. Sources cite differences in business strategies, financing of various projects, and whether Tata Sons should be converted to a publicly listed firm, a matter that has been creating rifts within the organization for some time now.
Chandrasekaran joined Tata in January 2017 after serving as head of Tata Consultancy Services. Under his tenure, Tata expanded its operations in airlines, semiconductors, batteries and electronics. Rescued Air India and put it under the Tata fold. Also, this year saw success for Tata Sons, with standalone profits jumping by 21.8 percent to Rs 31,961 crore in FY26. But newer ventures have had issues, as the loss of Air India has doubled compared to this period.
With no successor in sight, the attention turns to the AGM on August 18, which will focus on Chandrasekaran's future among others, and how Tata intends to handle its upcoming transition.
