Bharatiya Janata Party has removed Syed Showkat Gayoor from his post as District President of Pulwama in south Kashmir after a case was filed against him by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. He has been accused of extortion, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. This decision came soon after a contractor filed a case against him, saying that he was involved in extortion from him on grounds of extortion.
The complaint made by Mohammad Yasin Ganie claims that Syed Showkat Gayoor was obstructing and intimidating him and his drivers when he was working lawfully in the extraction and transportation of soil which was previously cleared by the authorities concerned. He also threatened him that he would stop the process until he paid Rs 5,00,000. The complainant says that he was forced to pay Rs 54,000 to him in two installments Rs 50,000 and Rs 4,000 last November.
He also threatened to use PSA against him if he did not meet his demand. Police took quick action against him. They booked him under rules related to obstruction of people who are extorting money illegally and intimidating people
The BJP was quick to respond to the issue. The BJP removed Gayoor from all his positions within the party, which included his post as District President, immediately. The action was taken based on the recommendation of Advocate Sunil Sethi, who happens to be the head of the party's Disciplinary Committee.
He consulted BJP J&K President Sat Sharma and General Secretary Mohammad Anwar Khan before taking this step. The party is now in the process of investigating the actions of Gayoor. The party's message is clear that they are committed to the maintenance of righteousness and purity in life.
