According to the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a huge amount of money, up to ₹1,000 crore, is required to support people affected by the recent floods in Assam. The Chief Minister added that PM Modi has assured to extend his support as soon as the administration completes its assessment of the losses faced by the victims of the floods, which is currently going on in four districts of Assam and will be completed by August 30. Also, PM Narendra Modi instructed the concerned officials to ensure that no cheating takes place while Assam provides aid to flood victims.
So far, the authorities have managed to review 8,000 families and found that these families have suffered the loss of assets valued at ₹150 crore. As per the authorities, by August 30, they would manage to conduct the examination of around 60,000 families affected by the floods in Assam. After this, they would conduct cross-checking by September 15 and would perform a second verification of the affected families in Assam.
Compensation and Relief Measures Implemented
In previous remarks by the Minister of Cultural Affairs, Bimal Borah, he had stated that compensation could range from ₹1.78 lakh to more than ₹3.5 lakh per family depending on the extent of damage to their properties.
The floods this year, in two rounds since April, have affected 25 districts. Over 1.2 million people are impacted, and 101 casualties have been reported. While things seem to be improving in certain locations, several areas in Sibsagar remain flooded. There are 15 relief camps currently handling more than 4,000 people who had to relocate due to the flood situation.
Financial assistance for repairing 793 damaged schools was also provided. In addition, cash aid was provided to 65,000 families. Sarma highlighted that over 72 social media influencers have raised funds for the flood victims. The government will monitor the use of these funds before considering recognition/celebration of these influencers.
