Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu, Udhayanidhi Stalin, was detained from his residence in Chennai on Tuesday. However, after nearly 90 minutes of questioning at the police station, he was granted station bail following directions from the Madras High Court. Stalin has denied any wrongdoing and has alleged that the case is politically motivated.

After his release, Stalin shared photos of his arrest on Instagram. He wrote,

“The #SofaModel government, instead of addressing the plight of farmers, has arrested me to divert attention from the real issues. Abusive warriors of the ruling party have spread false allegations that I used inappropriate words during the Tanjore protest. They are trying to please someone by filing false cases against me and making me travel from Chennai to Tanjore."

"When I was arrested, I looked at the media and said that I was treating this arrest as a comedy. I did not run away out of fear of the police. But today's Chief Minister is the kind of person who would even arrest the families of the 41 people who died in Karur without any hesitation or media scrutiny. Despite the tragic loss of lives in Karur, he chose to go to Malaysia the very next month for a movie promotion.”

Why was Stalin arrested?

Stalin was arrested over an alleged remark he made about actress Trisha Krishnan. During the DMK's protest in Thanjavur (Tanjore) over the water dispute, he was delivering a speech when some people in the crowd shouted Trisha's name. In response, Stalin allegedly made a remark that the ruling party and several women's organisations described as "obscene" and "double-entendre," alleging that it insulted both women and the actress.

"I am the grandson of Kalaignar": Stalin

“If the Chief Minister wants to arrest me, he is free to do so. I am not afraid of arrest. I am the grandson of Kalaignar and the son of Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin.

If I fight for farmers and get arrested, I will get arrested not once but 100 times. Even if I take more than 3000 kilometers not 300 kilometers for the welfare of farmers, I am ready to go. Your suppression will never stop our people's jobs!,” Stalin added.

No response from Trisha

Trisha has not made any public statement regarding the ongoing controversy. Her fans, however, have expressed their displeasure over the incident.

Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut also reacted to Stalin's arrest by sharing a post on her Instagram Stories. She wrote,

“Public display of filthy abuses, double-meaning, obscene and vulgar jokes is not acceptable in any civilised society. Mr Stalin was sent to jail for the offence. He might be out on bail by now, but it sets a good precedent.”
