A first-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student in Surat has been barred from taking an exam for a year after he was found using “smart” artificial intelligence (AI) glasses to cheat.

The alleged incident, which occurred during examinations held in March and April this year at the college in Surat’s Varachha area, was made public only a week ago when the student appeared before the college authorities for a hearing.

According to media reports, the student admitted to attempting to cheat using the AI glasses and was punished. The college is affiliated with Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU).

AI glasses emerge as new exam cheating tool

Over the past several months, there has been a noticeable increase in the use of smart or AI-powered glasses to cheat in exams on campuses worldwide. Several such incidents have been reported in the US, the UK, China, Korea and Taiwan.

The university’s anti-cheating “flying squad” discovered the first-year BBA student “handling his reading glasses in an unusual way”, according to media reports. The officials then found that the glasses were “AI-enabled Meta glasses.”

The student was subsequently taken to a separate room and questioned in the presence of professors and the college principal. According to the sources, the student demonstrated to the administration and professors how the glasses worked.

Student fined, barred from exam for a year

“The camera captured an image of the question paper, and then AI generated the answers, which the student could hear through open-ear speakers. The principal took away the glasses and asked the student to give a written apology. The student was also booked for copying,” the sources said.

The student was also asked to pay Rs 10,000 as a penalty for cheating in the exams using AI-powered glasses, the sources said. He was subsequently barred from taking the exam in that subject for a year.
