Up To 40 Hospitalised After Chlorine Gas Leak At Nagpur Water Facility

Up to 40 people were admitted to hospitals following a chlorine gas leak at a water purification facility in Nagpur district early on Monday. Residents and employees at the plant reported having trouble breathing.

According to officials, the leak started at around 1 a.m. from a 900-kg cylinder of chlorine gas at the Godhani Nagar Panchayat's water treatment facility, which is close to Nag Mandir Tekdi and Fago Patil Layout. Many people complained of breathing problems and coughing as the gas spread to neighbouring residential areas.

Up to 40 Hospitalised After Chlorine Gas Leak

Following the incident, around 20–25 residents and 8–10 plant workers were affected. Up to 40 patients are being treated at Sparsh Hospital and Mayo Hospital, according to the police.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and fire department arrived at the scene and started neutralisation and rescue efforts. Wearing protective equipment, NDRF members entered the building to neutralise the gas leak.

Chlorine Cylinder Secured

With the help of the NDRF, the fire department, and Orange City Waterworks staff, the chlorine cylinder was put in a tank containing water mixed with caustic soda at around 5:30 a.m. after the leak had stopped.

The police have instructed locals to stay at least 200 metres away from the plant until 11 a.m. as a precaution.

The situation is currently under control, according to the authorities.
