In reference to the group of high ranking Iranian officials present at the week long state funeral for the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died in joint US and Israeli airstrike on February 28, US President Donald Trump has stated that Washington has the capacity to eliminate the remaining Iranian leadership with "one shot" if it so chooses.
US President Donald Trump added that he has been keeping a careful eye on the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the former Iranian Supreme Leader, and that he saw a ‘potential military opportunity’ because Iran's senior leadership was in one location.
Trump's 'One Shot' Claim
In a recent interview, Trump stated that the United States had the option to strike Iran's leadership but decided against it due to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
"They are all there. One shot, and we can take them all out, but we are not going to do that because we would have nobody to negotiate with," Trump said.
The remarks come as Washington and Tehran continue to hold indirect negotiations aimed at reaching a broader agreement following the recent conflict.
Additionally, the US president asserted that Iran was keen to reach an agreement with Washington. "They are begging to make a deal," he said.
Trump claimed that both sides had agreed to pause negotiations for a week until funeral related events concluded. He added that neither side would undertake military action during that period.
Security Concerns for Mojtaba
According to sources, Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's new Supreme Leader, would not be present at his father Ali Khamenei's funeral because of serious security concerns.
According to Ayatollah Hakim Elahi, ongoing Israeli threats and increased surveillance concerns would make Mojtaba's public appearance ‘dangerous’.
'Maybe It's Fake Tears': Trump
Trump also expressed surprise at the scale of public mourning during Khamenei's funeral in Tehran, claiming that he believed many Iranians opposed the late supreme leader.
"Maybe it's fake tears," Trump said.
Embassy Responds on X
Responding to Trump's remarks, the IRI Embassy in Armenia wrote on X,
"People can be killed, but ideals cannot. You killed Ayatollah Khamenei, but in reality, you broke a perfume bottle whose scent spread everyplace. You don't understand these things because you have neither civilization, nor history, nor honor."
