The owner of the property off EM Bypass that currently houses the Trinamool Congress (TMC) headquarters has approached the Pragati Maidan police station on Sunday, stating that he wants the former ruling party of Bengal to vacate the premises.
Montu Saha, who owns the building at A/P-1/A Canal South Road, said his tenancy agreement with the party ended in late 2025. According to him, repeated requests to vacate the space have gone unanswered, forcing him to approach the police.
TMC MLA claims original HQ
At the same time, controversy is also brewing around the party’s original headquarters. TMC MLA Javed Khan, who is currently seen as a rebel voice within the party, has claimed that the land on which the original Trinamool Bhawan stands belongs to his family.
I have all the documents to prove that the Topsia Road plot is owned by my family, he said.
Montu Saha took legal action
Saha and his son Amit visited the property to speak with TMC members and request them to vacate the office. But they found the office empty. After waiting for a while, they eventually left for the police station.
According to them, they will now take the legal route to get the property back. The building has been used as Trinamool Bhawan since the party moved its headquarters there around three years ago, and has also served as a key coordination office during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and preparations for the 2026 Assembly polls.
The party had shifted its headquarters to the Canal South Road property while renovation work was planned at the original office. Amit Saha said the property was rented out in 2022.
Montu Saha said,
Once the agreement ended last year, we kept requesting them to vacate. The building also needs repairs, and we want it back for our business. They had told us they would leave by July, but that hasn’t happened. Recently, we haven’t been able to reach anyone from the party, so we had no option but to go to the police.
Before renting it out to the TMC, the Saha's ran a hotel called Arab Residency from the same premises.
A TMC functionary said Saha had not done any favour to the party by renting out the property, adding that ‘in return, he had bagged multiple contracts.’
