Three Newborns Injured After NICU Warmer Catches Fire In MP's Chhindwara

In the early hours of Saturday, a warmer in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Chhindwara District Hospital in Madhya Pradesh caught fire, injuring three newborns. Hospital officials subsequently shifted all three babies to Jabalpur Medical College for specialised treatment.

Three babies were inside the warmer when a spark from its filament caused a fire at around 1:50 am. Hospital personnel quickly extinguished the fire and removed the babies from the warmer.

Three Newborns Injured In NICU Fire

After being examined by experts, including the Dean and Medical Superintendent of Chhindwara District Medical College, the three injured infants were shifted to Jabalpur for further treatment. According to the hospital administration, 33 babies were in the ward at the time of the incident. Thirty infants were successfully evacuated, while three babies inside the warmer suffered injuries.

Due to the lack of a paediatric surgeon at the Chhindwara facility, the injured newborns were referred to Jabalpur for specialised treatment.

Hospital Probes NICU Fire

The equipment was later examined by hospital officials, while technicians were sent to inspect the warmer and other electrical equipment. Images from the hospital showed personnel rushing to evacuate the children after the fire, while the incident also caused concern among the families of newborns admitted to the ward.

The hospital administration is expected to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident, including an inspection of the warmer and other electrical equipment in the neonatal ward.
