Teenager Dies After Jumping From Maharashtra Hill, Father Falls While Trying To Save Him

A 19-year-old man died after jumping from a mountain top in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district on Friday afternoon. His father also died after falling while trying to save him, according to authorities.

The incident took place at Khawadya Hill in the Tisgaon area, under the jurisdiction of Waluj MIDC police station.

According to police, the teenager went to the hill at around 10 am after arguing with his parents over his demand for a new mobile phone. Concerned about him, his parents followed him to the hilltop and tried to persuade him to return home.

Rescuers struggled to stop teenager

After learning that the teenager was attempting to jump, police, firefighters and villagers also reached the spot. The 19-year-old kept moving near the edge, making it difficult for rescuers to predict where he might jump, despite their efforts to set up a safety net at the foothill, according to sources.

Waluj MIDC police station inspector Rameshwar Gade said,

“It seems he was deliberately attempting to take the extreme step. The situation continued for nearly three hours. After 1 pm, his father slowly approached him and pleaded with him to step away from the edge. The teenager suddenly jumped, and his father also fell while trying to grab and save him.” 

According to the inspector, police had planned comprehensive rescue measures at the scene.

Also, the mother lost her life during the unfortunate incident. After seeing her son and husband fall into a deep gorge from the hillside, she was unable to bear the shock and fell from the hill as well. All three family members, the son, father and mother lost their lives in the incident.

“We, along with the administration, were trying to convince the teenager for almost three hours, but he was not in a condition to listen to anybody,” said Sanjay Jadhav, former sarpanch of Tisgaon village, who was among those trying to persuade the 19-year-old.

The bodies were recovered and sent for further procedures, police said.
