Two infrastructure projects worth Rs 990 crore in Maharashtra have been approved by Indian Railways. The projects include doubling an existing railway section and constructing a new railway line. The initiatives aim to increase rail capacity and improve passenger and freight train operations.
The Central Railway's 10.86-kilometre Chouk-Karjat stretch will be doubled at a cost of Rs 497 crore, according to the Railways. The Panvel-Chouk-Karjat route currently has a single-line section.
New Line To Improve Connectivity
The doubling project will increase capacity and facilitate better freight and passenger train movement. Once completed, the project is expected to enable five additional passenger trains in each direction every day. It is also expected to reduce freight train detention and support an additional 18.35 million tonnes of freight traffic annually.
The second project, which will cost Rs 493 crore, involves constructing a 38.21-kilometre new railway line between Mukutban (Adilabad) and Gadchandur. In the districts of Yavatmal and Chandrapur, the line will improve access to industrial and mining areas and provide a shorter rail route. It is also expected to offer an alternative route to help ease congestion on the existing Wardha-Manikgarh section.
New Line To Handle Freight Traffic
After commissioning, the new line is expected to support two MEMU trains per day in each direction, according to the project details. The project is also expected to handle 6.08 million tonnes of freight traffic per year, including coal, cement, iron and steel, fertilisers and foodgrains.
Together, the two projects will increase railway capacity in different regions of Maharashtra. The Mukutban-Gadchandur line will provide a new rail corridor, while the Chouk-Karjat doubling project will increase capacity on an existing route. Both initiatives are expected to improve freight and passenger transportation and enhance the overall utilisation of the railway network.
