Rain damaged several sections of the elevated road on the Lucknow-Kanpur Motorway, raising fresh concerns over its construction quality. Between Sainik School and the Sarojininagar industrial area, the asphalt layer has peeled off at around six locations, exposing loose stones and resulting in potholes of various sizes.
It has also been reported that the rain led to depressions forming in several areas of the motorway. To repair the affected areas, the project's agency deployed its patrol team.
Two road stretches sink amid rain
According to reports, a 20-metre stretch of the Lucknow-Kanpur highway between km 65.4 and 65.5 sank. The agency's patrol team reached the location and began repairs after receiving information.
Similarly, a nearly 300-metre section near km 67 also sank. Although traffic has not yet been permitted on the affected stretch, repairs on this section were completed by Saturday.
The soil beneath the road also reportedly gave way after the rain near Bandukheda, around kilometre 69.8. During the downpour, protection work at Chiraiya Nala also sustained damage and sank.
Construction quality concerns rise after rain damage
Concerns over the quality of the expressway's construction and maintenance have been raised as similar issues have surfaced at several locations despite ongoing rainfall. However, the concerned agency has begun repairing the affected areas.
The elevated road's barrier near the Shivpura toll plaza has developed large cracks. A portion of the ramp has reportedly begun to sink during the rains, while the barrier along the Kanpur-Lucknow carriageway has also sustained damage.
These flaws in the ramp and divider surfaced within a month of construction, raising further questions about the quality of the construction.
