Rahul Gandhi, Congress Party President, strongly emphasized the issue of women’s rights and protection during his discussion with the students in Pune on Saturday. The discussion was a part of Rahul Gandhi’s “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign, which is specially designed for the daughters of the nation. During his discussion with a group of people, Rahul Gandhi criticized the “Manusmriti mentality” which still aims at controlling the life of women. According to him, women belong to none other than themselves. Rahul Gandhi pointed out that some ancient books, such as the Manusmriti, used to consider women subservient to their fathers, husbands, and then sons.

At the same time when Gandhi was speaking, he made a mockery of Prime Minister Narendra Modi too. Gandhi showed a video in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented on the usage of language by girls in the protest at Jantar Mantar, which happened because of the paper leak incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the whole situation a "shock". Gandhi raised a question about why there is such a norm for the same. Gandhi stated that boys and girls both used language in the Jantar Mantar protest, but the behavior of girls alone was criticized.

Congress Party Leader Talks About Statistics on Violence Against Women

Rahul Gandhi referred to some statistics and highlighted the fact that there are many instances of female foeticide every year in the country. He also talked about the high levels of harassment and violence faced by women and noted that in most cases violence is not reported due to social stigma. Gandhi also talked about the statements made by other leaders linking rape with women’s behavior. He concluded his talk by asking youth to rise against patriarchy.
