Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued efforts to push for an end to the Russia-Ukraine war, saying the Indian leader has “very good ideas” for resolving the conflict.

Putin made the remarks during his annual foreign policy address at the plenary session of the Valdai Discussion Club.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of those global leaders who, even though we maintain very good and friendly relations, both personally and diplomatically, continually brings up the issue and asks about ending the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin said.

He added that PM Modi had shown a strong interest in ending the conflict and had offered ideas aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions.

Putin also said Russia was grateful for PM Modi's efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully and as soon as possible.

PM Modi Calls for End to ‘Endless War’

On August 31, during their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Prime Minister Modi urged Putin to move from an “endless war” towards an “end of war”.

PM Modi has raised the issue with Putin on previous occasions as well. “This is not the era of war,” he told the Russian President in September 2022.

During a meeting with Putin in Moscow in July 2024, PM Modi also said that “peace talks do not succeed amid bombs, guns and bullets” and that a solution to any conflict cannot be found on the battlefield.
