Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) has implemented brachytherapy, a highly specialized radiation treatment that provides precise and targeted cancer treatments, in a significant step towards improving cancer care in the nation's capital. Following the successful completion of its first brachytherapy surgery on June 9, the institute formally announced the service's inauguration on Friday.
Brachytherapy operates by inserting a radioactive source into or very near the tumor, in contrast to traditional radiation therapy. This minimizes radiation exposure to adjacent healthy organs and tissues while enabling medical professionals to provide a larger dosage of radiation directly to the afflicted area. Because of this, the treatment is thought to be more precise and may reduce the likelihood of adverse effects.
The center claims that patients with endometrial and cervical cancers, as well as some other cancers, benefit most from brachytherapy. It is anticipated that the installation of this cutting-edge facility will improve DSCI's capacity to treat cancer and give patients closer access to cutting-edge, efficient, and organ-preserving radiation therapy.
