A multi-storey residential building collapsed in Delhi's Seemapuri area on Wednesday, leaving several people trapped under the collapsed debris.
As per reports, the incident took place near Idgah Machli Mandi in Seemapuri around 3:30 pm. After taking cognizance of the incident, rescue forces, including the Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Police, reached the spot to rescue people from the debris.
As per media reports, portions of two to three adjoining houses were also affected by the collapse. Residents and civilians joined the rescue operation to save people trapped under the debris.
Seven people, including a three-year-old child, were found injured, while two to three people were suspected to remain trapped under the debris. The rescued injured people were taken to nearby hospitals.
Delhi Traffic Police advisory to citizens
The Delhi Traffic Police advised commuters to avoid the Seemapuri area as traffic movement was affected around Seemapuri Gol Chakkar, DLF Bhopura and nearby roads. The advisory was issued to clear the route for rescue vehicles and allow them to move freely.
Is earthquake the reason?
The exact cause of the collapse has not yet been established. However, local residents claimed that the collapse could be a consequence of the earthquake tremors felt in the Delhi-NCR area. The exact reason can only be determined after an investigation.
A similar collapse happened in the previous month, when a paying guest building collapsed, leaving seven people dead. Thereafter, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) launched several operations to seize multi-storey buildings that were poorly maintained or required special attention.
