President of the Congress party, Mallikarjun Kharge, in a statement made today, said he was highly distressed by the flash floods that have occurred in Nepal. He urged the government to take urgent measures to assist people who have been affected by the calamity. These include citizens who have been missing or stranded in the neighboring country due to the disaster, which has resulted in the death of at least 175 people.
Kharge's Appeal To The Centre
Kharge addressed the media and stated that such a tremendous loss would make the country grieve. Kharge further stated that all efforts should be made to trace the remaining missing people. Kharge highlighted that some of these missing people are tourists and pilgrims. Kharge felt that at times like these, there is a need to assist. Kharge also informed that he was writing a letter directly addressing the Prime Minister. Kharge appealed to the Prime Minister to assist the missing, the dead, and their families.
Rescue And Relief Operations Underway
The floods took place as a result of a sudden rise in the level of the Bhote Koshi River following the movement of a high-speed flow of stones and debris that was probably caused by a glacial/rock-ice fall at the Rasuwagadhi border and had passed through places such as Timure and Syaphru Besi. The infrastructure, including the roads, bridges, and houses, has suffered a lot of damage. The Nepalese security forces have taken recourse to helicopters as well as other forms of ground rescue operations, while India has come to the aid with supplies, medicines, and food.
