A 25-year-old farmer died in the area of Chaubepur in Kanpur on Wednesday night, only a few hours after he approached the police station to register a case of being attacked with a knife by his elder brother. The deceased, named Girja Shankar Nishad, was standing near his house in the village of Wajidpur at about 9:30 pm when his neighbor Kuldeep Nishad allegedly confronted him over the complaint that he had filed during the day. This argument led to an attack with a country-made pistol.
How the Attack Unfolded?
As per the police reports, Kuldeep opened fire on Girja Shankar, firing three shots at him. The first shot narrowly missed as Girja dived for safety, but the second and third shots hit his hand and chest, respectively, seriously injuring him. Those who were present in the neighbourhood heard the sound of gunshots and came out of their houses, only to find that the gunman had fled from the spot.
Old Rivalry Suspected in Killing
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi, initial findings seem to suggest that a longstanding rivalry between the two families was behind the murder. Rampal, brother of Girja Shankar, complained to the police earlier that day that his brother had abused and assaulted him with a knife. The villagers intervened to stop the scuffle, after which both brothers reported to Chaubepur police station with a formal complaint. Charges have now been filed against the accused with the help of the family's complaint, although he is yet to be apprehended. Special teams have been formed to find out the whereabouts of the accused.
