The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) and the Social Security Agreement between India and the United Kingdom have officially taken effect, representing a significant milestone in their bilateral relationship. These agreements are anticipated to enhance economic collaboration, bolster supply chains, increase investment flows, and generate new opportunities for businesses and professionals in both nations. The execution of these agreements marks the start of a new phase in the India-UK strategic partnership, fueled by trade, technology, innovation, and the movement of talent.

Pm Modi calls the agreement a defining milestone

The agreements are a "defining moment" in India-UK relations and will translate the shared aspirations of both countries into concrete benefits for their people, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement will energize the farmers, entrepreneurs and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) of India by improving their access to the UK market.

The Prime Minister also stressed that this partnership will enhance cooperation in the areas of technology, professional services and innovation and offer more mobility to skilled Indian professionals. “These agreements demonstrate the growing trust between our two democracies and reaffirm our commitment to shared prosperity,” he said.

Zero-Duty Access Opens New Export Opportunities

One of the biggest advantages of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is that it will remove tariffs on almost 99 per cent of India’s exports, covering almost the entire trade value. This will help to raise the competitiveness of Indian products in the UK, which is one of the world's largest consumer markets.

The deal opens up huge opportunities for important export sectors such as textiles, leather, gems and jewelry, engineering goods, marine products, chemicals, processed food, electronics and manufacturing, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said. Industries that are very reliant on labour are expected to receive a boost in exports, a rise in production and more jobs to be created as tariff barriers are dismantled.

Major Boost for Farmers, MSMEs and Labour-Intensive Industries

The pact is expected to be a boon for Indian farmers, fisheries, forest products, food processors and MSMEs. The government projections estimate that 97.1% of tariff lines for processed food goods will be duty free and Indian agricultural products will get duty-free access into the UK market.

The deal is expected to boost India's competitiveness in the UK's agri-imports market worth over $90 billion, apart from creating new jobs in farmer producer organisations (FPOs), food processing units, logistics and export-oriented companies. But sensitive products such as rice, sugar, chicken, pigs and eggs are still protected under the deal.

Services Sector and Skilled Professionals Stand to Gain

The deal greatly expands the possibilities for India's rapidly growing services sector as well as for merchandise trade. It benefits IT, IT-enabled services, financial services, education, healthcare, engineering, consulting, telecommunications and professional services. It includes all major service industries and 137 sub-sectors.
The partnership also offers special opportunities for 1,800 Indian chefs, yoga teachers and classical musicians to emigrate each year, enhancing personal relationships and job prospects for eligible Indian professionals abroad.

Social Security Pact Brings Relief to Indian Professionals

For Indian professionals working in the UK for a limited time, the Agreement on Social Security is expected to provide a major financial advantage. Under this agreement, Indian workers sent to the UK for up to five years will not need to pay National Insurance contributions there while continuing to contribute to India's social security system.

Government estimates suggest that this agreement will benefit over 900 businesses and more than 75,000 Indian professionals. The exemption is expected to reduce costs for Indian companies, improve their competitiveness globally, and encourage more skilled professionals to move between India and the UK.

A Forward-Looking Economic Partnership

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal described the agreements as transformational. He stated that the India-UK FTA would create unprecedented opportunities for exporters, manufacturers, small businesses, farmers, and the services sector. He expressed gratitude to UK Secretary of State Peter Kyle and the negotiating teams from both countries for their dedication in finalizing the agreements.

With the implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and the Social Security Agreement, India and the United Kingdom have built a foundation for a stronger economic partnership. The agreements are expected to increase bilateral trade, attract more investment, create jobs, and prepare both countries for long-term growth in a more connected global economy.
