22-foot Ganpati idol collapses during Mumbai parade, killing two and injuring five

A section of a 22-foot Ganpati idol collapsed during a parade in the Bhuleshwar neighbourhood of South Mumbai late on Saturday night, leaving two people dead and five others injured, including two children.

The incident occurred at around 9:51 p.m. near the renowned Bhuleshwar-cha-Raja Ganpati mandal near Jay Ambe Chowk, around 50 metres from its destination at Fanas Wadi, Marine Lines. A portion of the Plaster of Paris (PoP) idol broke off and fell onto onlookers while the idol was being transported from a workshop in Byculla.

Two dead, five injured

Sanket Nevshe, 33, the mandal president, and Brijesh Hemant Joshi, 30, were identified as the deceased. All seven injured people were taken to local hospitals, including JJ Hospital, GTH Hospital and Reliance Hospital. Nevshe and Joshi were declared dead at the hospitals.

Injured people remain in stable condition

The five injured, Vaibhav Ghenand, 38; Pawan Chaurasiya, 25; Kunal Kashid, 26; Lavanya Ganer, 5; and Divya Ganer, 7, are receiving medical treatment and are reportedly in stable condition.

According to the LT Marg police, a case of accidental death has been registered, and further legal action will be taken after the post-mortem examination.
