The rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Delhi’s Mehrauli locality have sparked a broader debate over the safety of homeless families living on the streets. Following the incident, Delhi Police are expected to recommend the construction of shelters for the homeless, along with stricter verification of cab drivers’ credentials.

According to the authorities, the proposals will be presented individually to the Delhi government, District Magistrate (South Delhi), and Transport Department. According to police, providing temporary shelters to homeless families could help reduce the risk of such incidents.

These recommendations come after the alleged kidnapping, rape, and murder of a young girl who was sleeping on a pavement near a metro station in Mehrauli.

According to investigators, the accused, identified as cab driver Bashu Kumar Singh, allegedly picked up the child on Monday morning and is accused of committing the crime.

Cab Driver Arrested in the Case

Police alleged that the accused attempted to tamper with evidence after the incident. The investigators stated that he changed his clothes, cleaned his car, and proceeded to work before getting arrested on the same day. Authorities are also working to strengthen the screening and verification process for drivers associated with app-based cab services.

Akhilesh Yadav Meets Victim’s Family

The incident has triggered widespread public and political outrage. The leader of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, also visited the victim’s family and expressed condolences. He assured the family of full support and demanded strict action against those responsible.

The victim’s family, on the other hand, continues to seek justice. According to police officials, more information will be released once the forensic investigation is completed.
