Conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar Convicted Over Fake Judge Call

A conman who has already had his fair share of high-profile scams and is now accused of impersonating the incumbent Supreme Court judge in the year 2017 has been convicted by a Delhi court. It is appalling to think that Sukesh Chandrasekhar impersonated a judge just to get bail on a corruption case pending against him at that point in time. This incident has been termed a “theatrical production” by Chief Judicial Magistrate Harshita Mishra, Tis Hazari Courts, as reported by Bar and Bench.

The Fake Judge Scam Implementation

Based on what the court said, Chandrasekhar somehow managed to seize the mobile phone of a police constable when Chandrasekhar was in custody. Then, using this phone, Chandrasekhar called Special Judge Poonam Chaudhary using both Special Judge Poonam Chaudhary’s landline and Special Judge Poonam Chaudhary’s personal number. The first caller identified himself as the secretary of a judge at the Supreme Court. Then the second caller identified himself as the judge from the Supreme Court himself, bringing up the Home Ministry and Supreme Court Collegium, and demanding Chandrasekhars release. Threatened by possible implications, Special Judge Poonam Chaudhary contacted the Supreme Court and confirmed that such a call was never made to her from the Supreme Court.

Court Criticises Delhi Police Investigation

The court referred to the investigation done by the Delhi Police as being haphazard and superficial in the sense that the investigators were unable to trace the mobile phone used in the fraud, or how Chandrasekhar had gained access to the constable's device. The court convicted Chandrasekhar of committing offenses under Sections 170, 189, and 507 of the Indian Penal Code.
