In the CJP protester assault case, a Delhi court on Tuesday granted three-week interim bail to self-described right-wing influencer Swatantra Bhardwaj, who was detained earlier this month.
Delhi Police detained Bhardwaj in September after he acknowledged assaulting the father of a student demonstrator at Jantar Mantar in July.
Bhardwaj’s alleged assault claim in viral video podcast
In a widely shared video podcast, Bhardwaj, who identifies as a “kattar Hindu,” allegedly claimed to have cracked a protester’s skull at Jantar Mantar. He was referring to a fight in which the girl’s father, a Ghaziabad resident, was injured in the head.
In the video, Bhardwaj is allegedly seen saying that a politician’s intervention prevented him from going to jail even though he had attacked the father of a CJP demonstrator.
CJP members demand action against Bhardwaj over alleged assault
He also allegedly claimed in the video that the alleged victim required 60 stitches and was close to death, and that he should have been charged under Section 307 of the IPC, which deals with attempted murder.
He was taken into custody soon after members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), led by Saurav Das, marched to the Parliament Street police station and demanded that Bhardwaj be charged with murder under the SC/ST Act and other sections.
