Bihar Braces For Flood Threat As Gandak Surges

The disaster management machinery of Bihar is operational now as reports came in regarding an unexpected flood formation in the upper reaches of the Gandak River, which passes through Nepal. Authorities fear that there is an increase in water level. Areas in proximity to the river have been put under strict surveillance, and preparations are being made to handle any eventuality that may arise. The state’s Disaster Management Department said that they are doing their best to ensure the safety of people and are monitoring the situation, both in India and Nepal.

Flash Flood Warnings Issued for Gandak Catchment Areas

As stated in the official notification, a high risk of flash flooding is expected in several districts in Nepal, namely Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Lamjung, and Tanahun, which come within the Gandak catchment area. The catchment areas of Kosi include the districts of Dolakha and Sindhupalchok, which are prone to flooding. Since the river systems are not limited by borders, any increase in water upstream will invariably impact Bihar, being located downstream.

Chief Secretary Inspects Preparedness Status

Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit needed to see the ground situation, and therefore, he held a meeting through video call with District Magistrates and senior police officers.  Amrit instructed the districts to remain vigilant and keep the rescue and relief measures ready. Water Resources Department instructed that water should be let out from each gate of the Gandak Barrage and its canals in order to have safe water flow. Water Resources Department instructed engineers to monitor the embankments and other structures continuously. The government says there is no need for any panic. People are requested to remain prepared as authorities remain with the resources and rescue teams at their disposal.
