A school teacher, aged 48 years, from the Dhemaji district of Assam, was arrested by the police on Wednesday for attacking and killing his wife and three minor children with an axe in their house. The accused, identified as Firoz, is said to have informed the local people who apprehended him on the spot that he was finding it difficult to maintain his family on a monthly income of Rs. 10,000. He had been working as a teacher in a private English medium school in the village named Telem.

What Happened Inside the House?

According to the neighbors, they heard screams from the house early Wednesday morning but discovered that the door was locked from inside and Firoz told them not to enter. When they finally broke open the door, they found him holding a bloody axe. His wife, 33-year-old Sinowara Begum, together with their three kids aged 13, 8 and 5 years old, were found dead with visible injuries on their bodies.

Police Investigation Underway

The corpses have been taken to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital for the purpose of conducting an autopsy. The axe recovered from the crime scene will be tested. According to the officer-in-charge of the Sinemchapori Police Station, Jitendra Borah, the accused and other relatives are being interrogated as part of the investigation process. Speaking to a senior police officer, it was clear that it would be premature to come up with conclusions without a full investigation. A video showing Firoz narrating his distressing moments has been circulating on the Internet despite the claims that Firoz had not been investigated by the police.
