Maharashtra authorities have promptly punished five people who have been implicated in the deaths of three newborns following an investigation into the fire in the hospital that has been said to be caused by negligence in maintenance and faulty safety equipment. The incident happened early in the morning on August 24 when a fire broke out at the Special Newborn Care Unit of the Amravati District Women’s Hospital, resulting in chaos in the ward housing 39 babies. Though the majority of the children were rescued in time, three innocent lives could not be saved.
Suspensions Follow Fire Safety Failures
They include Sushilkumar Wakchaure, the deputy director of health services in Akola Circle, alongside the hospital’s Medical Superintendent Vinod Pawar and the District Surgeon Arun Salunkhe. Apart from them, the administrative officer and the electrician who were on duty have also been sent home. The Health Services Commissioner Sanjay Katkar-headed committee found that the fire alarm and sprinklers had ceased to function, and the door of the pump house was locked, while a defective ventilator could have ignited the flames.
Government Orders Hospital Safety Overhaul
According to the authorities, the mentioned staff members would be charged with negligence and poor supervision in line with state regulations. In addition, the two private contracting firms associated with the malfunction of the maintenance systems could also face blacklisting. Employees from the public works department who are involved in the current situation would come under scrutiny as well. In the future, all the SNCUs and NICUs in the state of Maharashtra should be equipped with CCTV cameras. Fire drills should be conducted in hospitals.
