Air Travel Within India Dips 4.8% In July, DGCA Data Shows

This month, the number of those who travelled by air within the country was lower. In July, the total number of people who flew within the country was 12 million. This number fell from 12.6 million last year in July. This shows a fall of 4.8%. These statistics have been provided by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. They also provided figures for the number of passengers on their planes in July. With this fall, the overall trend for this year is still positive. The total number of people who have flown within the country from January to July is 98.4 million. This number is slightly higher than the 97.78 million who flew last year in the same period. This shows an increase of 0.64% in domestic air traffic.

Airline-Wise Numbers Show Shifting Market Shares

IndiGo is still working as an airline, but it faces some problems. For example, in July, the airline carried 8.08 million passengers; however, this figure is smaller than 8.92 million in June. The Air India Group carried 2.88 million passengers; this figure is also smaller than the 3.22 million recorded in the previous month. Akasa Air and SpiceJet had a decrease in the number of their passengers. Akasa Air carried 665,000 passengers, and SpiceJet carried 187,000 passengers. It is important to mention that, unlike expectations, IndiGo and the Air India Group increased their market share despite the decrease in the number of passengers. Unlike them, Akasa Air and SpiceJet lost their market share.

Cancellations Stay Low, IndiGo Tops Punctuality Charts

The number of canceled flights was quite low, at just 0.62 percent of the total number of flights. In most cases, the flights were canceled due to some problems. They could be due to problems associated with the airline operation or bad weather conditions. IndiGo stands out in terms of punctuality of flights by having 91.2 percent of its flights departing on time. Akasa Air and the Air India Group also have very good records. However, SpiceJet does not fare well, it has the number of on-time departures equaling only 34.6 percent. The data is based on the ten largest airports monitored by DGCA. Punctuality is synonymous with IndiGo.
