One of the most extensive review studies of bipolar disorder treatments has been performed, where 77 meta-analyses of 116 interventions have been studied in order to find out the most efficient treatment solutions for all ages and stages of the disease.

Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric illness which is characterized by substantial changes in an individual’s moods, energy, and activity. Individuals suffering from this disorder may have depressive episodes which include low mood and low energy and manic ones which involve increased mood, energy and activity. EBI-BD (Evidence Based Interventions for Bipolar Disorder) was designed by the international group of researchers, headed by scientists from The Ottawa Hospital, Canada, and universities of Spain, Italy, France, and the UK.

It uses evidence collected from various studies to enable clinicians to establish effective treatments that are backed by the best evidence. The study considers the interventions in relation to various aspects including age of the patients and whether the patients are in depression, mania, or maintenance stages.

Scientists indicate that this tool can assist in enhancing decision-making about treatment by simplifying the process of accessing and using complex evidence. The results of this study can be used in the future in making personalized care for individuals suffering from bipolar disorder.
