A landslip was witnessed in a slum area in Kurla West around early Tuesday morning, leading to the deaths of two people and the entrapment of several more underneath the debris. As per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation disaster management cell, this mishap took place at about 3:48 am at Gaushiya Chawl located in Chirag Nagar when a portion of the neighboring hillock collapsed on some shanties.
It is mentioned by civic authorities that six to seven shanties have been buried under the mud and debris due to the collapsing of the hillock. There are estimates that four to six people are still trapped underground and are being rescued.
Both of the casualties have been identified as Sahil Ansari, who was 28 years old, and Mohamed Samir, who was 14 years old. Both of their bodies have been sent to Rajawadi Hospital. Two other people from the area, who have sustained injuries during the incident, are said to be in stable condition.
After the occurrence of the landslide, the National Disaster Response Force personnel joined civic officials to clean the site of the incident and continue searching for survivors. The rescue efforts are currently underway.
The accident took place in Mumbai at a time when there has been an unexpected increase in rains towards the end of the monsoon season.
