The emotional understanding of canines regarding human beings may be much deeper than expected. According to a recent study, there are specific areas in the dog’s brain that react to various emotions expressed by people. Thus, this research has provided an explanation for the ways dogs react to human expressions.
This discovery has been published in iScience and has become the first proof that dogs are capable of distinguishing various negative human emotions including such as anger, sadness, and fear.
For this purpose, the researchers studied the brain activity of dogs who were shown various images of people with different facial expressions. The results of the study have shown that various emotions caused the activation of particular areas in the dog’s brain.
One of the remarkable discoveries was made in relation to happiness. Pictures of happy people’s faces made the dog’s caudate nucleus work. The caudate nucleus is the part of the brain connected with reward and motivation, so we can conclude that the dogs perceive these images as very important for them.
The research results confirm the increasing number of data indicating that dogs are very sensitive to human emotions. The ability of distinguishing human faces could be one of the factors that determine the emotional link between a man and a dog.
