Buying a cough syrup from a pharmacy without a doctor's prescription will no longer be possible, as the Union Health Ministry has brought syrup-based medicines under tighter regulation. The new rule, notified through the Drugs (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2026, has come into effect immediately.

Officials said the decision is aimed at ensuring safer use of medicines and preventing self-medication, which can sometimes lead to serious health complications. Under the revised rules, chemists will be required to dispense cough syrups and other medicinal syrups only after checking a valid prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

The move is part of the government's broader efforts to strengthen drug quality monitoring and patient safety. It follows concerns raised in recent years over the quality of certain syrup formulations and the risks associated with their misuse. Authorities believe the new regulation will encourage responsible use of medicines and improve public health outcomes.
