AIIMS-Delhi has accomplished the second dual kidney transplant from a 70-year-old brain-dead donor, giving new hope to people suffering from chronic kidney failure.
This surgery, which took place on July 28, consisted of implantation of both kidneys of the same donor in one recipient. The donor was regarded as a “marginal donor” owing to her old age, which is a kind of donor who is more vulnerable to organ rejection.
The surgery was done by the Department of Surgical Disciplines along with the departments of Nephrology, Anaesthesia and Transplant Immunology, as well as ORBO of AIIMS.

According to doctors, this successful surgery shows the benefits that can come from making use of organs from deceased individuals at an advanced age, as long as there is proper assessment and matching of the donor. The technique of dual kidney transplant can assist in using organs that are not appropriate for regular kidney transplant surgery.
This success story also comes as part of the efforts to increase the availability of organ donations among Indians.
